NWS storm spotters are trained volunteers who provide ground-truth reports of severe weather — tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds, and flooding — directly to local Weather Service offices. Their reports help forecasters issue more accurate and timely warnings, saving lives.

Becoming a certified spotter is free and open to anyone. Training is offered online and in-person through local NWS offices. If you're interested in weather and want to make a tangible difference in your community, spotting is one of the most impactful things you can do.
