Open ToolRadar Reading Tips
Check Velocity
Reflectivity shows storm intensity, but velocity (Doppler) reveals rotation. Look for green/red couplets close together — that indicates a rotating storm.
Dual-Pol Products
Correlation Coefficient (CC) below 0.95 co-located with a rotation couplet is a debris signature — a strong indicator a tornado is on the ground.
Tilt Strategy
Always check multiple elevation tilts, not just base reflectivity. The lowest tilt (0.5°) is best for detecting ground-level rotation. Higher tilts reveal storm structure.
Look for the Hook
A hook echo extending from the right-rear of a supercell is the classic radar signature of a mesocyclone. The hook often wraps around where a tornado is located.
